Shame of the seas.

In a society where we need to enhance sustaining developments though dealing with a changing world where surprise is likely, referring to Carl Folke quote (*), the proliferation of giant liners, with disproportionate volumes and capacities, carrying tens of millions of cruise passengers across the world’s seas strikes as much by its incongruity as by its greenwashing policy. Surf simulators, skating rink, theaters, casino, climbing walls, stores, pools, hot tubs, giant waterslides, promenades, miniature golf, sports fields, laser-game, zip line, restaurants, bars, promoted as a means of entertainment sound as many threats to the environment, biodiversity and the quality of life of the populations visited.

However, the growing trend of climate change impacts and related tipping points does not seem to be affecting the growth of cruise companies, which questions the way values and value prioritization can be changed. Once values are formed, they are believed to be relatively stable. This would suggest that one attempt to strengthen pro-environmental and pro-social values could be through the educational system. Moreover, some studies suggest that values may change later in life if initial values are challenged repeatedly, suggesting that we should also repeatedly challenge values and behavior that hinder sustainability efforts (**).

Echoing this changing world where surprise is more and more unlikely as well as the question of challenging values, three triptychs in which ships, nature and the urban environment are intertwined until they are no longer discernible from one another, merging into a single mass impacted by the effect of light on silver paper.
